Bridging The Gaps – The Modem

From one gigantic globe into a tiny community, that is the how the world has been transformed thanks to the power of the internet. A single click on one’s mouse and he can, in a matter of seconds, connect to any person in any part of the world who has internet connection. This instantaneous form of connection is made possible by an undersized electronic gadget called the modem.

The modem is small but it sure isn’t diminutive when it comes to function. Right within this device happens some of electronics’ most complex processes. It converts digital data into analog carrier signals and vice versa and that is how information is received and sent through the complex connections of networks. Without the modem, we would all be seeing codes, which we will never be able to interpret, the modem does the interpretation for us and serves it to use in a silver platter.

The word modem actually comes from two separate terms: modulator and demodulator, and these two words clearly define the functions of the said device. At first, the device was invented with the intention of providing a tool that will interpret and transmit data between a host computer and some terminals. But later on, its use was also applied between end computers.

Because there has been massive progress in computers and the worldwide web, modems also evolved. Initially, modems were produced based on modulation, synchronization, line type, and range. But today, modems are usually specified based on speed and type of connection. First on the list is the DSL or the Digital Subscriber Line modem. These modems were designed to provide speedy internet access using DSL high speed connections, internet speeds that are way faster than the classic dial-up connection. What sets the DSL modem apart from the other modem is that besides faster internet connection, it has filters, which allow you unimpeded phone connections without disrupting internet access. Yes, with this gadget, you can make and take calls while surfing.

For areas where cable internet is not available, most internet users connect through the use of the satellite modem, a wireless device that converts digital information into radio waves in order to communicate with a satellite dish.

Talking about wireless modems, some of the most popular types of modems today are USB modems. This type of modem is easier to connect because it uses the USB ports of computers. And that brings us to specific LTE modem. These are tiny gadgets that easily connect to one’s notebook or laptop for easier mobile connection. Android tablets and other mobile gadgets have their own built-in modems. The latest device that allows a revolutionary type of internet connection is the 4G modem. With the 4G modem, multiple laptops can connect using the 4G router. The 4G router distributes the internet connection to multiple users.
